OUR BOOK SELECTION

Big Al represents the wise adult who listens to others and helps resolve

their problems.  The book contains three short stories:  Big Al Helps Bo-Peep,

Big Al Helps Lion and Big Al Helps Three Brothers. The first story deals with

emotions after a loss.  The second deals with friendship and bullying and the

third deals with co-operative effort and leadership.  Exercises after each story

include a guided discussion, the spelling of the numbers one to ten, word

families, opposites, seasons and a group activity.  All three stories help develop

        character education.

This is the second book in the "Big Al" series.  In this book, Jeremy is a

"Dare Bear".   He loves accepting a dare.  Unfortunately, he frequently finds

himself in difficult situations.  Big Al advises Jeremy to consider the safety

and purpose of the dare before accepting it or not.  Following the story, there

are sample actions that Jeremy's friends might dare him to do.  The child

must consider Big Al's advice before deciding whether Jeremy should accept

        or reject each dare.

Big Al teaches the child not to give in to peer pressure and to choose his

actions wisely.  It is okay to decline a dare.
